The United States spends the most money on health care than any other country in the world, in most cases we spend double what most other countries spend. Does that mean we are healthier? Well, the United States has the lowest life expectancy, the highest rates of suicide, and the highest numbers of chronic disease. Does that sound like we are healthy to you? The average American spends $1200 on prescription medications every year. In 2019, Americans spent $511 billion dollars on prescription medications. More than 131 million Americans are currently taking prescription medications, that is 66% of the population. There were 4.55 billion dispensed medications in 2020. Why am I throwing all these facts at you? I am hoping to simply explain that the health care system of the United States is a sick care system. There is a time and a place for medications, but are they solving the health related problems our country is having? Are the prescribed medications curing the root cause of the problems our nation is having with their health? With a few simple adjustments we can take charge of our health. Simply put, if we as a nation put more effort into moving our bodies, knowing and making better decisions about what we eat, and the chemicals and toxins in our environment, then we would be significantly healthier.
